A Realistic Routine for High-Carbon Steel & Quenching That Fits a Busy Life

Life can get pretty hectic, right? Between work, family, and the endless to-do lists, it sometimes feels like there's little room for our passions. But for me, bladesmithing is more than a hobby; it’s a calling. I’ve found ways to integrate my passion for high-carbon steel and quenching into my busy life without sacrificing quality. I’d like to share my routine with you, along with some practical tips that can help you maintain your craft even when life gets in the way.
Understanding High-Carbon Steel
First off, let’s talk about high-carbon steel. For those of you just starting out, high-carbon steel is a type of steel that contains a higher percentage of carbon, typically between 0.6% to 1.4%. This makes it harder and able to hold an edge well, making it ideal for knives. In my workshop, I primarily use 1084 and 1095 grades of high-carbon steel. They are readily available and relatively easy to work with.

Quenching: The Heart of Forging
Quenching is where the magic happens. The process hardens the steel, significantly impacting its performance. I typically use an oil quench, as it provides a more forgiving medium compared to water. My go-to quenching oil is Parks 50, which costs about $25 per gallon, and it lasts me quite a while.
For a busy schedule, I recommend the following:
- Prepare in Advance: Before the weekend, make sure your quenching setup is ready. I keep my quenching oil in a quart container, and ensure it’s at room temperature to avoid thermal shock.
- Heat Management: Use a reliable forge thermometer to maintain your heat. I target around 1475°F for quenching my high-carbon steel. This takes practice, but I find that using a digital readout helps me stay on track.
- Timing: When you're ready to quench, don't dawdle. I usually have my quench ready before I even remove the blade from the forge. Timing can make or break your blade's integrity.
Handling a Busy Schedule
One of the biggest challenges in keeping up with bladesmithing while managing a busy life is balancing time. Here are some tips that have worked for me:
- Chunk Your Time: I block out specific hours during the week for my bladesmithing. Even if it’s just an hour, it adds up! I find early mornings or late evenings often work best.
- Involve Friends or Family: Invite a friend over to work with you. Not only does it make the task more enjoyable, but it also helps you stay accountable.
- Set Realistic Goals: Don’t overwhelm yourself. Focus on one project at a time. I often set a goal to finish one blade a month, which keeps things manageable.
